HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c540W
Mr. Sackville

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what expenditure levels he has determined in respect of 1988–89 for the joint police and fire and civil defence authorities in the metropolitan areas and the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hurd

For these authorities, which under the Local Government Act 1985 are, for three years, deemed to have been designated under section 2 of the Rates Act 1984, I have determined expenditure levels as follows:

£ million
Police
Greater Manchester 94,052
Merseyside 66,916
South Yorkshire 40,691
West Midlands 92,254
West Yorkshire 72,479
Northumbria 49,926
Fire and Civil Defence
Greater Manchester 46,799
Merseyside 31,617
South Yorkshire 22,314
Tyne and Wear 22,649
West Yorkshire 36,489
West Midlands 42,696
London 166,775

The figures are net of receipts and pension contributions, and, for police and civil defence, of specific grant. For police the figures assume that police grant in 1988–89 will remain at 51 per cent.

Formal notice of their expenditure levels has today been sent to each of the authorities together with advice on the procedure for applying for redetermination of the expenditure levels.
