HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c696W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what research is being undertaken by or on behalf of his Department into the cost-effectiveness of different types of treatment in the National Health Service.

Mrs. Currie

The main Government-funded body for carrying out research on the effectiveness of different medical treatments is the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the Department of Education and Science.

A principal purpose of the Department's own research programmes is to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the National Health Service. Many of the studies detailed in the latest edition of the Department's Handbook of Research and Development include a cost-effectiveness element. A copy is in the Library.
