HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 cc581-2W
Mrs. Fyfe

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the unemployment levels in Maryhill constituency for the current period and at the same time for each year since 1979, giving separate totals for males, females and school-leavers under 18 years.

Mr. Lang

Unemployment statistics for parliamentary constituencies did not become available until the introduction of electoral ward-based data in June 1983. The numbers of male and female unemployed claimants in the Glasgow, Maryhill constituency, and the equivalent figures for school-leavers under 18 years of age, in June each year from 1983 to 1987, are shown in the table:

All Unemployed Claimants Unemployed School leavers under 18 (included in All Unemployed)
Male Female Total Male Female Total
1983 5,382 1,824 7,206 210 190 400
1984 5,359 1,906 7,265 201 169 370
1985 5,755 2,057 7,812 193 150 343
1986 5,882 2,087 7,969 214 188 402
1987 5,773 1,971 7,744 192 145 337

These figures are not comparable because of changes in the basis of the count.

The information is available in the Library.

Mr. McAllion

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the seasonally adjusted unemployment figures for Scotland and the Dundee travel-to-work area for the last available date, and figures in May 1979, June 1983 and June 1987, compiled on a similar basis.

Mr. Lang

On a comparable basis, seasonally adjusted unemployment in Scotland was 333,600 in June 1987, 308,200 in June 1983 and 150,400 in May 1979. I regret that corresponding figures for the Dundee travel-to-work area cannot be provided since seasonally adjusted unemployment figures are not available below Scotland level.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list for (a) each postal code district and (b) each local authority ward the numbers unemployed in June 1983 and June 1987.

Mr. Lang

I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
