HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 cc706-7W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the total numbers of beds in (a) psychiatric wards, (b) mental hospitals and (c) community care for the current year by National Health Service region; and what are the equivalent figures for each year since 1982.

Mrs. Currie

The table shows the average daily number of available beds in National Health Service mental illness hospitals and units in England, by regional health authority, for the years 1982 to 1985. Figures for local authority care are not readily available; the only relevant information relates to places in residential homes for mental illness supported by local authorities in the above years and is published in "Homes and Hostels for the Mentally Ill and the Mentally Handicapped, at 31 March. England", copies of which are in the Library.
