Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will list by standard regional classification those defence establishments which employ more than 400 people, providing details of the number of (a) military and (b) civilian personnel at each establishment where security considerations do not prevent the figures being divulged; and whether he will provide a summary of the total number of (i) military and (ii) civilian personnel employed in each of the regions.

It would not be in the public interest to provide a list of numbers in defence establishments in the detail requested.

The numbers of United Kingdom service personnel and MOD civilians deployed by standard region are centrally recorded on an annual basis at 1 July but the numbers for 1987 will not be available before October. The details for 1986 in thousands are as follows:
