HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c527W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what changes have been made in the presentation of homicide and manslaughter statistics by his Department since 1957.

Mr. John Patten

I shall write to my hon. Friend.

Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average cost of apprehending, remanding and trying a person believed guilty of a criminal act; and what is the annual cost of keeping such a person in prison.

Mr. John Patten

The available estimated costs per person are Crown Prosecution Service £100 in 1987–88; Crown court trials £860 in 1986–87; legal aid for Crown court cases £327 and for magistrates' courts cases £213 in 1986–87. Where employed in 1986–87, duty solicitors cost £29, 24-hour duty solicitors £84 and "green form" assistance £39 per defendant. Costs of imprisonment in 1985–86 were £12,792 per prisoner per year in all establishments and £11,700 per prisoner per year in remand centres and local prisons. I regret that costs per person to the police and costs per defendant in magistrates' courts are not available.
