Mr. Denzil Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which North Atlantic Treaty Organisation short range intermediate nuclear force missiles will be eliminated following a zero-zero agreement.

Mr. Mellor

The United States/Soviet intermediate nuclear force negotiations in Geneva cover United States and Soviet longer and shorter range intermediate missiles. The United States does not have any shorter range intermediate missiles in Europe.

Mr. Denzil Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what assessment his Department has made as to the Soviet response in the event of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation deciding to deploy more nuclear capable bombers and SLCM equipped submarines following a zero-zero agreement;

(2) whether he has had any discussions with European North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies concerning the possible basing of United States SLCM equipped submarines and more nuclear capable bombers following in intermediate nuclear force agreement.

Mr. Mellor

There are continuing discussions within the North Atlantic Alliance on all relevant factors concerning the maintenance of deterrence with a minimum number of weapons. These discussions are confidential.
