§ Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jonesasked the Secretary of State for employment if he will publish information showing the total number of jobs covered so far by the new workers scheme together with average wages paid; and if he will also provide a breakdown by sector of this information indicating, in particular, the number of new workers scheme jobs in (a) hotel and catering and (b) hairdressing.
§ Mr. LeeSince the new workers scheme began in April last year 41,863 applications have been approved. The average weekly wage paid to employees under the scheme is not available. However, to qualify for support employers must pay young people no more than a gross weekly average of £60 if aged under 20, or £65 if aged 20, on the day they start the job to be supported.
A breakdown of the number of applications approved since the scheme began, by standard industrial classification division, is provided in the table. The hotel and catering sector is included in division No. 6, and the hairdressing sector in division No. 9. A more detailed breakdown is not available.
