HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 cc390-1W
Mr. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the total value of non-lethal defence equipment sold by the United Kingdom to Iran and Iraq in each year since the outbreak of the war between these two countries.

Mr. Sainsbury

It has been the consistent policy of successive Administrations not to give the details of defence sales business with other countries. As is well known in the case of Iraq and Iran, Her Majesty's Government have strictly adhered to the policy guidelines for defence sales as set out in the answer given on 29 October 1985 by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in reply to a question from the right hon. Member for Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale (Mr. Steel).
