asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what expenditure level he proposes to determine for the Inner London education authority in respect of 1988–89.

Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1985 the Inner London education authorirty is automatically subject to designation under part I of the Rates Act 1984 for three years from 1 April 1986. For the year beginning 1 April 1988 have decided to determine an expenditure levell of £955 million; this represents a cash standstill on the implied expenditure level for 1987–88, plus allowance for the cost in a full year of the 1987 school teachers' pay settlement. The ILEA has today been notified of this determination.
