Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average length of time spent in Prison Department establishments for persons detained under Immigration Act powers during 1986.

Mr. Renton

The average period of detention in Prison Department establishments in England and Wales of persons initially received under the Immigration Act 1971 powers who were discharged in 1986 was about four weeks.

Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were received into Prison Department establishments under Immigration Act powers during 1986 by individual prison establishments.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the numbers of immigrants each year from 1979 to date who have legally gained admission as immigrants to the United Kingdom.

The numbers of persons granted settlement in the United Kingdom in each year from 1976 to 1986 are published in table 18 of "Control of Immigration: Statistics, United Kingdom 1986" (Cm. 166), copies of which are in the Library.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information is available regarding the numbers of individuals who have entered the United Kingdom as illegal immigrants each year since 1979.
