HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 c352W
Mr. McGrady

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his policy on the removal of flags and emblems from roads, footpaths and other buildings within his control.

Mr. Stanley

It is a matter for the operational judgment of the RUC to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent a breach of the peace arising from the provocative display of any flag or emblem.

As far as the flying of the Union flag from Government buildings in the Province is concerned, the practice is broadly in line with that in the rest of the United Kingdom.
