HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 c380W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, for each financial year of its existence, what are the sums he has transferred to the London borough of Tower Hamlets in respect of the value of rate income forgone in respect of those parts of the enterprise zone in that borough; and what is his estimate of the likely sums to be paid in each of the years before the termination of the arrangements.

Mr. Trippier

The following amounts have been paid to the London borough of Tower Hamlets in respect of rate revenue forgone in the Isle of Dogs enterprise zone:

Financial year Amount £
1982–83 1,144,672
1983–84 1,386,381
1984–85 2,232,004
1985–86 2,177,419
1986–87 12,833,554
1 Subject to audit.

The borough has also been paid £2,475,000 in the present financial year so far. The amount paid in each year is affected both by the amount of demolition and new development that takes place and by the level of the rate set by the borough. It is therefore, not possible to estimate what amounts are likely to be paid in future years.
