HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 c425W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current capacity of electricity generating stations in Scotland; and by how much in each of the past four years this has exceeded demand in Scotland.

Mr. Lang

I am advised by the Scottish electricity boards that the current capacity of electricity generating stations in Scotland is 8,399 MW. This includes British Nuclear Fuel's reactors at Chapelcross and UKAEA's prototype fast reactor at Dounreay, but excludes any private generating capacity. Taking account of the planning margin (currently 28 per cent.), the excess capacity over maximum demand was 1,316 MW in 1983–84; 1,130 MW in 1984–85; 1,053 MW in 1985–86; and 652 MW in 1986–87.
