asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of (a) women and (b) men employed within each grade in his Department in each year since 1979.

The tables show the number of non-industrial staff in post (full-time equivalents) by sex from January 1979 to January 1987 by grade level (broadly equivalent grades in the open structure/administration group based on a comparison of salary scales).

Table A shows the staff of Her Majesty's Treasury during the relevant period.

Table B shows the staff of the Civil Service Department for the period January 1979 to January 1982.

From January 1983 the Treasury numbers include some of the staff who were formerly in the Civil Service Department. The remaining staff of the Civil Service Department were absorbed into the Management and Personnel Office of the Cabinet Office and are included in the Cabinet Office's numbers.
