asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the number of (a) women and (b) men employed within each grade in his Department in each year since 1979.

Figures are not available for industrial staff. A full answer for non-industrials would be excessively long, so it has been summarised into standard groups of grades as follows:

General Service Category

  • Includes Planners, Research Officers, Lawyers and Office Service grades such as Messengers.

Departmental Category

  • Grades unique to the Department including Royal Parks Police, Housing Inspectors, Warders and Museum staff.
