HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 c290W
Mr. Amess

asked the Attorney-General how many Crown prosecutors are employed at present; and how many were employed before the formation of the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales.

The Attorney-General

On 1 June 1987 there were 1,263 lawyers employed within the Crown Prosecution Service. Of these, 626 were in the Crown prosecutor grade. Prior to the establishment of the Crown Prosecution Service in 1986, the majority of prosecuting lawyers were employed by local rather than central Government. Accurate information as to their numbers is not available.
