§ Mr. Wigleyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the amount spent on mortgage tax relief in Wales, Scotland and each of the English regions in each financial year since 1979 both at outturn and 1987 prices.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[pursuant to his reply, 21 July 1987]; Estimates for the years 1979–80 to 1982–83 have been derived from the results of the survey of personal incomes and are given in the table.

The regional distribution of mortgage interest can be estimated from the "Family Expenditure Survey" but, as the sample size for the FES is relatively small, it is not possible to provide robust estimates of regional trends for the period after 1982–83. Accordingly, the following tables show the cost of mortgage interest relief in the United Kingdom from 1983–84 to 1987–88 with the percentage distribution of the relief by county and region, based on FES data from 1983 to 1985.
