HL Deb 21 July 1987 vol 488 c1378WA
Lord Moran

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have received any communication from the European Commission about the proposal to construct a barrage across the mouth of the Taff estuary, and if so what was the substance of that communication and of their reply.

Lord Trefgarne

There has been correspondence between the European Commission and HMG regarding the proposal to build a barrage across the mouth of the Taff-Ely estuary. It is not the usual practice to reveal the contents of such correspondence. However the noble Lord will wish to note that no final decision as to whether to proceed with the barrage has been taken. The economic and technical aspects of the proposals along with their conservation implications are the subject of continuing investigation. A decision to proceed would require parliamentary approval.
