HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 cc89-90W
Mr. Michael Marshall

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether any communication has been received from the United States Government or others regarding the possible effects on other planned international telecommunications projects in the Pacific region of the procrastination of the Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications over the licensing arrangements for its new KDD network.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Cable and Wireless has expressed to Her Majesty's Government its concern over the delay in the licensing of competitive services to KDD, the existing operator. This delay is holding up the planned construction of the north Pacific cable. We certainly hope that an early and satisfactory outcome is reached and we are continuing to monitor the position closely.
