Mr. Butcher

A framework programme for research and development in the European Community over the period 1984 to 1987 provides funding of 3.75 billion ecu (about £2.6 billion). The 1987 Community budget includes 1.040 billion ecu (about £0.7 billion) for research and development.

Negotiations for a further framework programme for the years 1987–1991 are nearing completion. This is expected to include provision of 5.2 billion ecu (about £3.6 billion) which includes 1.08 billion ecu (about £0.8 billion) for programmes already decided. A further 0.4 billion ecu (about £0.3 billion) will be subject to satisfactory agreements on the funding of the overall Community budget.
