§ 45. Mr. Allan Stewartasked the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to how many orders for equipment and materials related to the construction of the Channel tunnel have been placed in Scotland and the north of England.
§ Mr. David MitchellI understand from Eurotunnel that orders for equipment and materials related to the construction of the Channel tunnel placed with firms based in Scotland and the north of England so far total over £23 million.
§ 53. Mr. Brazierasked the Secretary of State for Transport what recent discussions he has had with the promoters of the Channel tunnel project about the security of passengers using the tunnel; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. David MitchellUnder the terms of both the Channel tunnel treaty and the concession agreement, the promoters are required to submit for approval of the two Governments any proposed designs, plans or arrangements affecting the security of the fixed link (which, of course, includes that of the passengers). As a preliminary to such submissions, officials of both Governments have held discussions with Eurotunnel; these are, of course, continuing, but I am sure that my hon. Friend will recognise that it would not be wise to make details public.
