asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied that British Rail's fares policy is consistent with the objectives set for the board by the Government.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied with the British Railways Board's implementation of Government objectives on fares as explained in the letter of the Secretary of State, on 21 October 1986, to the chairman of the board; and if he will make a statement.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his policy on the use of higher fares to limit demand for rail services; and if he will make a statement.

It is for the board to set fares taking account of its costs and the fares charged by its competitors.
