asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total spending by his Department on press and public relations in 1986–87; and what is the estimated expenditure for the current year.

Mr. Peter Walker

The total expenditure on press and public relations in 1986–87 was £969,057. This figure includes expenditure on salaries and accommodation for all the information grades and support staff, based on the ready reckoner figures for 1986–87.

Estimated expenditure for the current year is £598,500—a budget figure only—as the ready reckoner tables for 1987–88 are not yet available.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total spending by his Department on television, radio and newspaper advertising and other promotional literature in 1986–87; and what is the estimated expenditure for the current year.

Mr. Peter Walker

The total spending in 1986–87 on television, radio, newspaper and promotional literature amounted to £406,965.

The estimated spend for the current year for newspaper, television and radio advertising, together with other promotional literature, is £598,500.
