§ Ms. Armstrongasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what criteria are used in the provision of urban development grants.
§ Mr. TrippierUrban development grant is available to support projects which will contribute to the economic and physical regeneration of inner urban areas by bringing about additional private sector capital investment in these areas but which would not be commercially viable without some assistance from the public sector. Priority is given to536W projects in the areas of those local authorities which have been invited to submit inner area programmes. The criteria for approval of grant, and the procedure by which applications are appraised, are set out in more detail in the Department's explanatory leaflet, a copy of which I am sending to the hon. Member.
