HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 c508W
Mr. Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will arrange for the numbers of patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia to be analysed by frequency of re-admission to hospital.

Mrs. Currie

I am sorry I cannot give my hon. Friend the information he seeks. Statistics are not collected centrally on the number of patients in hospital with a particular diagnosis, and data about admissions to hospital cannot be linked to individual people. During 1986 there were 25,046 admissions of people to NHS mental illness hospitals and units with a main diagnosis of schizophrenic psychoses, and of these 22,523 (90 per cent.) were re-admissions. Further information can be found in Statistical Bulletin 1/86 "Mental Illness Hospitals and Units In England: Schizophrenic Statistics 1981–84", a copy of which is in the Library.
