HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 cc489-91W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the present position on the investigations by Mr. Cohn Sampson into allegations concerning the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Mr. Tom King

As I have already informed the House, I wish to make a statement as soon as I can about those aspects of the investigations which fall within my area of responsibility. I regret that I am not yet able to do so. In the meantime, however, I can inform the House that in response to one particular recommendation made by Mr. Sampson it has been agreed that certain matters of organisation and procedure should be more fully examined by way of a special inspection by Her Majesty's inspectorate of constabulary. With the agreement of the Chief Constable, Her Majesty's chief inspector is arranging for a special inspection to be undertaken by one of Her Majesty's inspectors forthwith. I shall of course, take account of its findings when I make my statement to the House.
