77. Mr. Patrick Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his plans for the future administration of council housing estates.

Mrs. Roe

We have plans to continue our policies of giving council tenants wider opportunities and choices. We shall legislate to give local authority tenants the right to opt for transfer to approved landlords.

We shall set up housing action trusts in designated areas to take over run-down local authority housing, renovate it and pass it on to different tenures and ownership.

We shall continue to encourage local authorities to improve the condition of council housing and to introduce more effective management and maintenance.
