HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 c516W
Mr. Irving

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make additional funds available so that all those who could benefit from AZT and other drugs can be treated.

Mr. Newton

Health authorities are expected to make provision for the costs of Retrovir (AZT) and other drugs from the resources allocated to them. In recognition of the particular burden they are carrying however, we have allocated an additional £1.6 million towards the costs of treatment with Retrovir to the three Thames regions which together are caring for the majority of people with AIDS.

Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services on what dates the group established to coordinate action against AIDS by the Health Ministers of European Economic Community countries has met; and whether he will make available reports of the meetings.

Mr. Newton

The European Community ad hoc working party of officials on AIDS had its first meeting on 24 June and will next meet in the autumn. It is not the practice to make available reports of meetings of Community groups of this kind.
