§ Mr. Allenasked the Secretary of State for Transport what kinds of tactile designs are used for tactile crossings to help the blind; and if he will take steps to standardise them.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyA tactile paving design specifically for use at pedestrian crossings has been developed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory in close consultation with organisations representing disabled people, including those who are visually handicapped.
Advice on the design, purpose and layout of the tactile surface was issued to highway authorities in the Department's disability circular DU 1/86 of 13 October 1986. That advice emphasises that the surface recommended should remain distinct from those surfaces used for other purposes.
