HC Deb 08 July 1987 vol 119 c151W
Dr. Marek

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how much was spent on nurse training in the last four years; how much he estimates will be spent in the year 1987–88; and what are the corresponding figures at constant prices.

Mr. Grist

The information requested is as follows:

Year Actual expenditure Constant price at 1987–88
£ million £ million
1983–84 24.940 25.237
1984–85 26.671 26.976
1985–86 25.802 26.080
1986–87 126.312 126.587
1 Estimated.

For the financial year 1987–88 it is estimated that the actual expenditure will be £29.5 million. For each year, actual expenditure is made up from two figures. The first is expenditure by the Welsh National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting on salaries of nurse teachers and other training costs. The second is salaries, national insurance and superannuation costs for learners, paid by health authorities. The salary costs do not take account of the service contributions made by learners during training, which vary according to the particular course and the school of nursing. There is additional, but not separately identified, expenditure on informal teaching costs (teaching provided by qualified staff to learners during clinical placements) and on maintenance and contributions in lieu of rates in respect of schools of nursing.
