HC Deb 01 July 1987 vol 118 cc106-7W
37. Mr. Home Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on British relations with Iran.

50. Dr. Michael Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on relations with Iran.

Mr. Mellor

The recent deterioration in relations with Iran was not of the United Kingdom's making.

Our position is that Iran must understand that any constructive dialogue with us can only prosper on a basis of reciprocity and provided the British diplomatic presence in Tehran is allowed to do its job without hindrance and with its safety assured.

The hon. Gentleman and my hon. Friend will know that my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs set out our position more fully in his speech to the House on 26 June.
