HC Deb 30 January 1987 vol 109 c431W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Paymaster General how many people were employed in the tobacco industry in the United Kingdom in the last calendar year for which figures are available.

Mr. Lee

The Department's employment statistics are produced on a quarterly basis and cannot be expressed in precisely the manner requested.

In September 1986 (the latest date for which figures are available) there were 17,000 employees in employment in the tobacco industry in Great Britain. These estimates are subject to considerable potential estimation error due to the relatively small number of employees in the industry.

Figures for the United Kingdom are not available.
