HC Deb 28 January 1987 vol 109 c254W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what research projects his Department has sponsored in the last three years to ensure that the marine transportation of radioactive substances and wastes is carried out in a safe way.

Mr. Michael Spicer

My Department has sponsored a project, which is currently being undertaken by the National Radiological Protection Board. This is designed to provide information on radiation doses to crew and passengers, and to review the segregation provisions for radioactive materials transported by sea. The report is expected shortly.

In addition, the Transport Committee on the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials (ACTRAM), in response to a recommendation from the Environment Select Committee, is currently considering whether changes in practice are needed to ensure the greater control and safety of the transport of radioactive materials through the English channel.
