asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is their intention to withdraw from the 1958 Geneva Convention on the continental shelf (or alternatively to seek to adhere to the 1982 UNCLOS convention) so that the legislation they are propsoing for the removal etc. of platforms on the United Kingdom continental shelf may be in accordance with international law.

No, It is not necessary to take either of these steps. The standards to be adopted pursuant to the powers proposed in the Petroleum Bill will be consistent with our obligations under international law.
