§ Mr. Peter BottomleyWe announced a national initiative to improve the roadside environment on 15 December 1986, at column 402. The Department also wrote to local authorities in England encouraging them to promote suitable projects under this initiative. I am sending the hon. Member a copy of the letter. The scheme is intended to improve the appearance of roads by landscaping, tree planting, and litter clearance and provide better amenities for motorists. This will be achieved through the use of the community programme and will be over and above the normal programmes of the Department and local authorities.
