Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Paymaster General (1) if his Department will set up an inquiry into the reasons for, and effects of, the recent chemical spillage in Southampton;

(2) if his Department has any plans to change the present regulations concerning hazardous substances in residential areas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

Investigation of the incident by inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive began within hours of the incident being reported on 15th January 1987 and is continuing.

Any implications of this incident for the relevant regulations will be considered.
