HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c53W
Dr. David Clark

asked the Paymaster General what is the assessment level during normal operations for maximum annual radiation exposure of any person outside the site boundary applied by Her Majesty's nuclear installations inspectorate in considering the safety case for a new nuclear power reactor expressed in millisieverts per year; and when this assessment level was introduced.

Mr. Lee

The maximum annual radiation exposure of any person outside the site boundary as a result of the normal operation of a new nuclear reactor licensed by Her Majesty's nuclear installations inspectorate is 5msv, for the whole body.

This limit for the general public has been used since 1959 when the licensing of nuclear power reactors was introduced in the United Kingdom. The limit was first recommended by the International Commission for Radiological Protection in its document ICRP2 and again more recently in ICRP26.
