Mr. Dobson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total number of manhours of Metropolitan police officers deployed to date in connection with the News International dispute.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that up to 30 November 1986 the total number of manhours of officers deployed in connection with the News International dispute was 1,133,808.

Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the total number of arrests in connection with the News International dispute at Wapping to the latest available date; and if he will break down that number by alleged offence.

I understand from the commissioner that, up to 29 December, 1,370 people had been arrested in connection with the dispute. Of these 1,238 were charged. The principal offence charged in each was as follows:
