HL Deb 12 January 1987 vol 483 cc469-70WA
Baroness Faithfull

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many detention centres (for children and young persons) there are in England and Wales, how many places these detention centres accommodate, what is the present number of vacancies, and what is the cost per place per week.

The Earl of Caithness

At the end of November 1986 there were 15 detention centres in England and Wales (five junior centres for those aged under 17 and 10 senior centres for those aged 17 or over). The total Certified Normal Accommodation (CNA) was 1,673 (602 junior and 1,071 senior). There were 584 vacancies (308 junior and 276 senior). On 19th December 1986 the number of senior detention centres was reduced to nine, with a consequent reduction in the CNA of the senior system to 1,016. In the financial year 1985–86, the average weekly cost of keeping a trainee in a detention centre was £324.
