HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 cc96-7W
Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the cost to public funds of Army horses being used in stag hunts in the New Forest on 17 November and 8 December, respectively.

Mr. Freeman

Horses from the Household Cavalry regiment participated in hunting in the New Forest on 17 November and 8 December 1986 at the invitation of the New Forest Buckhounds. No additional costs to public funds arose from their participation, apart from minor transportation costs from nearby RAF Sopley, where the regiment had arranged military and equestrian training.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Army horses were used in stag hunts in the New Forest on 17 November and 8 December, respectively.

Mr. Freeman

Seven Army horses on 17 November and six on 8 December 1986.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions during the last five years Army horses have been used in stag hunts; and how many have been injured.

Mr. Freeman

Army horses do not usually hunt with stag hounds, although they did so on two occasions at the end of last year. This was for the first time in recent years. No horses were injured.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what funds accrue to his Department for the hiring of horses to be used in stag hunts in the New Forest.

Mr. Freeman

None, as Army horses are not hired out for this purpose.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence to what regiments Army horses are attached which were used for stag hunts in the New Forest on 17 November and 8 December.

Mr. Freeman

The horses belonged to the Household Cavalry regiment based in London.

Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many officers and men, of which regiments, and of what rank and trade were involved in the transport of hunting horses to the New Forest on 17 November and 8 December.

Mr. Freeman

Three drivers, lance corporals from the Blues and Royals, were responsible for the transportation of horses to the New Forest from RAF Sopley (two on 17 November 1986 and one on 8 December 1986). In addition, the following also participated in the hunting on 17 November.
