asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many accidents occurred on the stretch of the A46 between Lincoln and Newark in each of the last five years; and how many people were injured and killed in these accidents.

Details of the accident record and casualties on the A46 trunk road between Lincoln city and Newark boundaries since 1981 are as follows:

employment benefits of (a) the Channel tunnel rail-link and (b) the Channel tunnel rail terminal at Waterloo; and if he will make a statement.

The investments which BR plans to make in providing passenger and freight services through the Channel tunnel will generate additional employment, both at the construction phase and in the operation of through rail services when the tunnel is opened. BR estimates that the following new jobs will be created:

  1. (i) construction of fixed works (from mid-1988 to mid-1993): about 1,650 jobs per annum.
  2. (ii) construction of rolling stock (from early 1988 to mid-1992): about 2,200 jobs per annum.
  3. (iii) operational phase (from mid-1993): about 1,500 jobs in the first year of operation, increasing as the level of services expands in subsequent years.

These totals include jobs which are likely to be created at the proposed Waterloo terminal. BR estimates these at about 350 per annum during the constructional phase, and about 550 in the first year of operation.
