§ Mr. Wyn RobertsCentral Government support towards billingual education comes from two main sources. Specific grant supports expenditure on certain local authority schemes approved by the Secretary of State. Any further spending by local authorities on bilingual education is eligible for rate support grant but information on expenditure supported in this way is not held centrally.
Since 1981–82 the level of specific grant estimated in the main Rate Support Grant reports has been as follows:

Our intention for the rate support grant settlement for 1987–88 is that the specific grant for bilingual education should be 1,075,000. No decisions have yet been taken for the years 1988–89 and 1989–90.
