Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide details of the number of households in Scotland consisting of (a) one adult and one or more children under 16 years and (b) two or more adults and one or more children.

Mr. John MacKay

The 1981 census showed that the number of households in Scotland consisting of one adult and one or more children under 16 years was 40,455 and the number consisting of two or more adults and one or more children was 594,520.

The information is contained in table 17 of the census 1981 Scotland housing and household report, a copy of which is in the Library.
