Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will list the levels of alcoholism and suicide rates for each of the prisons in Scotland for each of the past 10 years.

Information is published in the annual report "Prisons in Scotland", copies of which are available in the Library.

The numbers of inmates in penal establishments in Scotland who (a) received treatment for symptoms associated with alcohol abuse, and (b) died as a result of self-inflicted injuries in the years 1979–86 are as follows:
