§ Mr. Tom Coxasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average salary earned by prison officers in 1986; and what percentage of this salary was made up by the working of overtime.
§ Mr. MellorIn the financial year 1986–87 a basic grade prison officer with five years' service will have earned an average of £14,220. Overtime, at an average of just under 16 hours per week, will account for 37 per cent. of this amount. In addition, officers not occupying a rent-free quarter will have received a housing allowance of £1,330.
