§ Mr. Austin Mitchellasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what estimate he has made of the likely change in the level of exports and imports of manufactures as a result of the facility provided by the opening of a Channel tunnel on the forecast date.
§ Mr. ButcherThe opening of a Channel tunnel should help to provide both cheaper imports and more competitive exports, directly and by providing competition for other modes of transport. Such data as are available at present are too imprecise for useful forecasts to be made with any competence.
