Ms. ClareShort asked the Paymaster General how many people were engaged in the youth opportunities programme for each month of June to August 1983, inclusive; and what was the estimated effect on the number of people registered as unemployed for each of the relevant months.

Numbers June 1983 154,409 July 1983 127,800 August 1983 100,040 It is difficult to estimate the effects on the unemployment count as this varies with the different types of scheme offered under the youth opportunities programme and depends on a number of uncertain 390W assumptions. However, on average around 85 per cent. might have been otherwise unemployed during that period.
