asked the Minister for the Civil Service (1) what percentage of (a) external male appointees and (b) external female appointees to administration posts in the home Civil Service attended, as their last school attended (i) public schools, (ii) direct grant and other fee-paying schools and (iii) local education authority schools in each of the years 1979 to 1986;

(2) what percentage of (a) external male applicants and (b) external female applicants for administration posts in the home Civil Service attended, as their last school attended (i) public schools, (ii) direct grant and other fee-paying schools and (iii) local education authority schools in each of the years 1979 to 1986.

Recruitment to administration posts in the home Civil Service is mainly undertaken by individual departments and statistics on the schools background of appointees and applicants are not kept centrally.
