Mr. Fisher

asked the Minister for the Arts (1) what estimates he has for the construction costs of the new British Library on completion;

(2) what estimates he has for the construction costs of each phase of the building of the new British Library.

Mr. Luce

The latest estimated cost of stage 1A, the stage so far approved, including the cost of design and supervison of construction, is £218 million at 1986 prices. No decisions have been taken on subsequent stages.
